Cotton Candy Margarita

Cotton Candy Margarita

The most fun, most pink, most conversation-starting cocktail you will ever make — and it tastes even better than it looks.

I made this for a bridal shower and watched grown adults squeal when they saw it. There is something completely disarming about a drink with actual cotton candy floating on top of it. It looks like a party in a glass and it tastes like one too. Sweet and slightly tart with that unmistakable cotton candy flavour running through every sip.

The secret is the combination of pink cream soda and tequila with a cotton candy garnish that slowly dissolves as you drink. The longer you sip the more the cotton candy melts into the drink and changes the flavour as you go. It is genuinely one of the most fun cocktail experiences you can create at home in five minutes.

Ingredients
  • 2 oz silver tequila (100% agave)
  • 1 oz triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 oz pink cream soda
  • Pink cotton candy for garnish and inside the glass
  • Pink sugar or crushed cotton candy for rim
  • Lime wheel to garnish
  • Ice
Instructions
  1. 1
Rim two glasses by running a lime wedge around the edge and pressing into pink sugar or finely crushed cotton candy.
  2. 2
Place a small nest of cotton candy in the bottom of each glass.
  3. 3
Add tequila, triple sec and lime juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake hard for 15 seconds.
  4. 4
Pour the pink cream soda into each glass first over the cotton candy.
  5. 5
Strain the tequila mixture slowly over the cream soda. Do not stir — let the layers settle naturally.
  6. 6
Top with a generous puff of cotton candy on the rim and a lime wheel. Serve immediately before the cotton candy dissolves completely.

📝 Notes

The cotton candy dissolves quickly once it touches the drink so serve immediately after garnishing. The dissolving cotton candy slightly sweetens the drink as you go and the colour gets deeper and more vibrant. Do not stir it in — let each sip carry a little of the dissolving candy naturally.

It is fun, it is beautiful, it is genuinely delicious and it takes five minutes.

“I brought these to a birthday party and the birthday girl screamed when she saw them. Best cocktail reaction I have ever gotten.”

What You’ll Need

  • Silver tequila100% agave, blanco or plata. Silver tequila is clean and lets the sweet cotton candy flavour come through clearly without competing with it.
  • Pink cream sodaThis is the base of the sweet flavour and the source of the pink colour. Strawberry cream soda also works beautifully and gives a slightly fruitier flavour.
  • Cotton candyThe star. Use pink for a classic look or blue for a completely different visual effect. Both taste equally good. Find it in the party supplies or candy section.
  • Fresh lime juiceEssential for balancing the sweetness. The cream soda and cotton candy are both very sweet and the lime is what stops this drink from being cloying.

Helpful Tips

  • Serve immediately after garnishing with the cotton candy — it dissolves within a few minutes and you want guests to see the full effect when you hand them the glass.
  • Use blue cotton candy and blue cream soda for a completely different colour palette. Perfect for baby boy showers or a fun colour variation.
  • For a mocktail version, replace the tequila with lemon-lime soda and add a splash more cream soda. Equally fun and completely alcohol-free.
  • Make a big batch of the tequila, triple sec and lime mixture ahead of time. Keep it in a pitcher in the fridge. Pour the cream soda and add the cotton candy fresh for each individual glass when serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the cotton candy dissolve in the drink?
Yes and that is part of what makes this drink so fun. It dissolves slowly as you sip and gently sweetens and colours the drink as it goes. Serve immediately after garnishing so guests can see the full cotton candy effect before it melts.
Can I make this in a big batch?
Mix the tequila, triple sec and lime juice together in a pitcher and refrigerate. When serving, pour cream soda into each glass, add the tequila mixture, then top with cotton candy fresh for each glass.
What if I cannot find pink cream soda?
Regular cream soda works and gives a white or pale yellow drink. Add a few drops of pink food colouring to the tequila mixture before shaking to get the pink colour.
Is this very sweet?
It is a sweet margarita. The cream soda and cotton candy are both sweet. If you prefer less sweet, use plain sparkling water instead of cream soda and add just half the cotton candy garnish.

Storage

🥃 Same Night

Best drunk immediately. The cotton candy garnish dissolves quickly and the carbonation from the cream soda fades fast.

❄️ Make Ahead

Mix tequila, triple sec and lime in a pitcher up to 4 hours ahead. Refrigerate. Add cream soda and cotton candy fresh per glass at serving time.

🎨 Blue Version

Swap pink cream soda for blue cream soda and blue cotton candy. Same recipe, completely different look — great for baby showers.

🧃 Mocktail

Replace tequila with lemon-lime soda. Increase cream soda slightly. Every bit as fun without any alcohol.
