Swicy Honey Sriracha Chicken Bowl

Swicy Honey Sriracha Chicken Bowl

Sweet heat, sticky sauce, and a bowl so good you’ll put it on the dinner table three times this week.

There are weeknights when I genuinely do not have the energy for anything complicated. But I still want something that tastes like I actually tried. That is exactly when this bowl shows up on my table.

The sauce is what this whole recipe is built around. Honey, sriracha, soy sauce, a little sesame oil and some fresh garlic. You whisk it together in under a minute and it transforms into something so glossy and sticky and deeply flavoured that people will ask you which restaurant it came from. I have been making some version of this for years and I still get excited every single time that sauce hits a hot pan and starts to caramelize around the chicken.

“Swicy” is the word the internet decided to give sweet plus spicy food, and honestly it fits perfectly here. The honey takes the edge off the sriracha heat and the sriracha stops the honey from being cloying. They balance each other in a way that makes you want to keep eating long after you should have stopped. I have five ways to build this bowl below, from the classic stovetop version to an air fryer method, a meal prep edition and even a noodle bowl for when rice just is not what you are feeling.

πŸ”₯ The Sauce β€” This is Everything

3 tbsp honeyThe sweet side of swicy. Use real honey, not the squeeze bottle stuff.
2 tbsp srirachaMedium heat. Add a third tablespoon if you like real heat.
2 tbsp low sodium soy sauceAdds depth and that savory backbone the sauce needs.
1 tbsp rice vinegarCuts through the sweetness. Do not skip this one.
1 tsp sesame oilJust a little, right at the end. It is nutty and fragrant and makes everything smell incredible.
3 garlic cloves, mincedFresh only. Jarred garlic will not give you the same result.
1 tsp fresh ginger, gratedAdds a little warmth and brightness that ties it all together.

🍚 Classic Honey Sriracha Chicken Rice Bowl

This is the one you come back to every week. Juicy chicken thighs seared until golden, tossed in that sticky sweet heat sauce until every piece is lacquered and gorgeous, served over fluffy jasmine rice with whatever vegetables make you happy.

Classic honey sriracha chicken rice bowl with sesame seeds and green onions
Ingredients
  • 500g boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into chunks
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil (vegetable or avocado)
  • Full sauce recipe (see above)
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine rice
  • 1 cup broccoli florets, steamed
  • Β½ avocado, sliced
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions
  • Lime wedges to serve
Instructions
  1. 1
Whisk all sauce ingredients together in a small bowl and set aside. Get your rice cooking.
  2. 2
Toss chicken pieces with cornstarch, salt and pepper until evenly coated. The cornstarch is what gives you that slightly crispy exterior.
  3. 3
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken in a single layer and sear for 4 to 5 minutes without touching it. Flip and cook another 3 minutes.
  4. 4
Pour the sauce over the chicken. It will bubble aggressively. Toss everything together and cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken in a deep mahogany glaze.
  5. 5
Spoon rice into bowls. Pile on the chicken and all your toppings. Squeeze lime over everything right before eating.
πŸ’‘ Emily’s Tip: Chicken thighs are non-negotiable here. Breasts dry out fast under that heat and they will not hold onto the sauce the same way. Thighs stay juicy and get this gorgeous caramelized edge when the honey hits the pan.

🌬️ Air Fryer Honey Sriracha Chicken Bowl

The air fryer gets the chicken crispier than the stovetop version and uses almost no oil. You marinate the chicken first so the sauce goes deep into the meat, then it comes out of the fryer with these incredible caramelized edges that are almost too good.

Air fryer honey sriracha chicken with crispy caramelized edges
Ingredients
  • 500g boneless skinless chicken thighs (whole, not cut)
  • Half the sauce recipe (to marinate)
  • Other half of sauce (to glaze after cooking)
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine rice
  • Edamame, cucumber slices, shredded carrots
  • Sesame seeds and green onions
  • Sriracha drizzle to finish
Instructions
  1. 1
Make the sauce. Put chicken thighs in a bowl or zip-lock bag with half the sauce. Marinate for at least 15 minutes at room temperature or up to overnight in the fridge.
  2. 2
Preheat air fryer to 400Β°F (200Β°C). Place chicken in a single layer in the basket, shaking off excess marinade.
  3. 3
Air fry for 10 minutes. Flip, brush with a little more sauce, and cook another 6 to 8 minutes until the edges are dark and caramelized.
  4. 4
Rest for 3 minutes then slice. The inside stays perfectly juicy and the outside gets this incredible sticky crust.
  5. 5
Warm the remaining sauce in a small pan for 1 minute. Build your bowls and drizzle the warm sauce over the top of everything.
πŸ’‘ Emily’s Tip: Do not crowd the air fryer basket. If your chicken pieces are touching, they will steam instead of crisp. Cook in two batches if you need to. Those caramelized edges are what make this version so special and it is worth the extra few minutes.

πŸ“¦ Honey Sriracha Meal Prep Bowl

Sunday evening, one sheet pan, four lunches ready for the week. Everything roasts together in the oven while you do something else entirely. The chicken stays saucy and the broccoli gets these crispy charred edges that are honestly the best part of the whole situation.

Honey sriracha chicken meal prep bowls lined up in containers
Ingredients (4 servings)
  • 1kg boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • Double the sauce recipe
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for the vegetables)
  • 4 cups cooked jasmine or brown rice
  • Sesame seeds and green onions
  • Extra sriracha on the side
Instructions
  1. 1
Preheat oven to 425Β°F (220Β°C). Line a large sheet pan with parchment.
  2. 2
Make the sauce. Toss chicken thighs in half the sauce. Arrange on one side of the sheet pan.
  3. 3
Toss broccoli and bell pepper with olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread on the other side of the pan.
  4. 4
Roast for 20 minutes. Spoon more sauce over the chicken, then roast another 5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the broccoli has those gorgeous dark edges.
  5. 5
Divide rice and roasted vegetables into four containers. Slice or tear the chicken and divide evenly. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
πŸ’‘ Emily’s Tip: Keep the extra sauce warm in a small jar and pack it separately. Drizzle it over the bowl right before eating rather than storing everything together β€” it keeps the rice from going soggy and makes reheating so much better.

🍜 Swicy Honey Sriracha Noodle Bowl

Everything you love about the original bowl but on soba noodles instead of rice. The sauce clings to noodles even better than it clings to rice and the whole thing comes together in twenty minutes flat. This one has become a serious weeknight obsession in my house.

Swicy honey sriracha noodle bowl with chicken and vegetables
Ingredients
  • 200g soba noodles (or thin spaghetti)
  • 400g chicken thighs, sliced into strips
  • Full sauce recipe
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage or bok choy
  • 1 large carrot, julienned
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds, fresh cilantro
  • Lime and extra sriracha to serve
Instructions
  1. 1
Cook soba noodles according to packet instructions. Drain, rinse under cold water and set aside. Rinsing stops them sticking together.
  2. 2
Make the sauce. Cook chicken strips in a hot oiled pan for 5 to 6 minutes until cooked through and starting to colour. Remove from the pan.
  3. 3
In the same pan, add cabbage and carrot. Stir fry for 2 minutes until just softened.
  4. 4
Add noodles and sauce to the pan. Toss everything together over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce coats every noodle.
  5. 5
Add chicken back in. Toss once more. Serve topped with spring onions, sesame seeds and a squeeze of lime.
πŸ’‘ Emily’s Tip: If you cannot find soba noodles, thin spaghetti or rice noodles work perfectly here. The sauce is bold enough that whatever noodle you use will taste incredible. Just do not overcook them because they will keep cooking when they hit the hot pan.

πŸ₯¦ Low Carb Sriracha Chicken Bowl

All the swicy flavour, none of the rice. Cauliflower rice soaks up the sauce better than you would expect and with roasted broccoli, crisp cucumber and creamy avocado in the bowl, you will not miss the jasmine rice for even a second.

Low carb honey sriracha chicken bowl with cauliflower rice and vegetables
Ingredients
  • 500g chicken thighs, cut into chunks
  • Full sauce recipe (reduce honey to 2 tbsp)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 cups cauliflower rice (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup roasted broccoli florets
  • Β½ avocado, sliced
  • Β½ cucumber, thinly sliced
  • Sesame seeds, green onions, lime
Instructions
  1. 1
Make the sauce with 2 tablespoons of honey instead of 3. The lower sugar keeps things lighter without losing any of the flavour.
  2. 2
Cook chicken the same as the classic version β€” cornstarch coating, hot pan, sear until golden then toss in the sauce.
  3. 3
For the cauliflower rice, heat a separate pan over medium-high with a little oil. Add cauli rice and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it loses its raw smell and starts to go slightly golden.
  4. 4
Season the cauliflower rice with salt, pepper and a tiny splash of soy sauce. This is what makes it taste like something instead of just plain cauliflower.
  5. 5
Build the bowl. Cauli rice on the bottom, chicken and vegetables piled on top. Sesame seeds, green onions and lime to finish.
πŸ’‘ Emily’s Tip: Frozen cauliflower rice is actually better than fresh here because it has less moisture. Squeeze it in a clean tea towel before cooking to get rid of any extra water and it will cook up light and fluffy rather than steaming into a soggy mess.

Storing and Reheating

🍽 Same Night

Best eaten fresh while the sauce is still glossy and the chicken still has its caramelized edge. The sauce will thicken as it cools so eat right away.

❄️ Refrigerator

Keeps up to 4 days in an airtight container. Store the sauce separately if you can. Reheat chicken in a pan over medium heat for 2 minutes so it crisps back up rather than going soggy in the microwave.

🧊 Freezer

The sauced chicken freezes well for up to 2 months. Freeze in a flat bag, thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat in a pan. Cook fresh rice or noodles when you are ready to serve.

πŸ“… Meal Prep

Bowl 3 (the sheet pan version) is built for this. Four complete meals, one Sunday session, done. The flavours actually get better overnight as everything sits in the sauce together.
